Daniel Johnston Aerospace engineering — guidance, navigation and control

About

I am a final-year aerospace engineering student at RMIT, aiming at guided weapons and flight systems research and development.

What I actually enjoy is the join between analysis and hardware — the point where a calculation has to survive being built. That is why MasterGA tunes its gains with the elevator held to its real ±25° limit rather than assuming it away, and why the UAV's centre of gravity is solved in a script rather than trimmed with lead after the first flight.

I have run a small CAD, laser cutting and 3D printing business since 2023, taking jobs from client brief through to delivered part, which is where I learned that tolerances are a commitment rather than a suggestion. I have also worked continuously as a labourer since 2019, through full-time study.

I am an Australian citizen and eligible for an NV1 security clearance.

2021

Victorian Certificate of Education

Girton Grammar School, Bendigo

Subject dux in systems engineering, physics and environmental science.

Experience

2023–

Sole trader — CAD, 3D printing and laser cutting

Self-employed

End-to-end product work: client brief, CAD in SolidWorks and Fusion 360, manufacture, quality check, delivery. Operating a 70 W CO2 laser cutter for production runs, managing tolerances and material selection independently.
